Cross & Morse is a leading manufacturer of power transmission components. With a remarkable legacy spanning over a century, they offer a comprehensive range of products to a variety of industries worldwide including food, oil, agricultural and pharmaceutical.

Cross & Morse invested in the ZOLLER Smile 420 to minimise their tool presetting time. This has allowed them to ensure precise tool measurement and presetting, improve their tooling processes and ensure consistent product results.

ZOLLER UK delivers world-leading precision tool presetting, inspection, storage and management solutions, adding improved efficiency and value to any manufacturing process.

Project Brief:

Cross & Morse’s top priority is that its products meet the highest quality standards. They are consistently evaluating new technologies that can help to meet the demands of their complex production processes.

Cross and Morse were looking to update their old tool presetter to the latest technology and contacted ZOLLER UK to explore their tool presetting and management options.

“The company had been revising its tool measuring capacity for some time now. We were growing into different machines, different VDI sizes of tooling with different geometries, and we wanted to create much more of a tool library. During our first meeting with ZOLLER UK, the sales team answered all of our queries. The demonstration increased our confidence in the machine, especially with the easy-to-understand ZOLLER presetting control,” explained Alan Matthews, Cross & Morse’s Production Manager.

The Solution:

Cross & Morse invested in the ZOLLER Smile 420 tool presetter, supplied by ZOLLER UK, to elevate their tool management, optimising production processes, minimising breakdowns, and boosting overall productivity.

The Smile 420’s CNC spindle and auto-focus features are designed for shopfloor environments. It offers robust construction, ergonomic features and seamless data transfers to ensure exceptional accuracy and repeatability.

“The transition between the two technologies was very easy from my CNC technicians’ point of view. The people who use it on a daily basis find it very easy to use. They can see the step forward  that the ZOLLER Smile 420 has brought for us,” said Alan.

The Benefits:

Investing in a tool presetting solution from ZOLLER UK has allowed Cross and Morse to enhance the accuracy of their tooling and upgrade their old tool presetting machines to the latest technology. Cross & Morse is now able to ensure speed, accuracy and consistency in order to streamline their manufacturing processes.

CNC Technician, Thulani Ncube, commented:

“We’ve got a series of tools which we keep here that are only called out for specific jobs. The ZOLLER Smile 420 allows me to select a particular tool and immediately check its accuracy level on the machine to less than a micron. ZOLLER UK have always been on standby in-case we have any issues. They’ll pop up to see us, even to just check-up.”

Alan explained the benefits of having the ZOLLER tool presetter on their shopfloor for the last 12 months:

“We’ve had the machine over 12 months now. We recently had our annual service and there were no issues with it. I have no hesitation in recommending ZOLLER UK to any company looking to increase their machining efficiencies by reducing tool set-up times and eliminating the use of damaged or incorrect tooling.”
